Jack and Gove handed peerages by Rishi Sunak – Daily Business

New lords: Alister Jack and Michael Gove

Former Scottish Secretary Alister Jack and his fellow ex-Cabinet colleague Michael Gove are to receive peerages, confirming months of speculation.

The pair, along with former Tory chief whip Simon Hart, are on ex-PM Rishi Sunak’s final resignation honours list which has been delayed.

Mr Sunak has nominated seven people for peerages, according to the Financial Times. In July, he created a peerage for Liam Booth-Smith, his chief of staff, and a knighthood for Oliver Dowden, his deputy prime minister.

It was revealed earlier this year that Mr Gove, who held various cabinet positions and is now the editor of The Spectator, had been offered a peerage.

In 2022 Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledged to abolish the House of Lords in favour of an elected upper chamber but he has since revised his plans.

The Labour party’s election manifesto last year committed to consulting on a new chamber but introducing a mandatory retirement age of 80 and the abolition of hereditary peers which has passed its Commons stages and is progressing through the Lords.
