Scottish banker Debbie Crosbie heads the business figures honoured in the King’s Birthday Honours list which also includes knighthoods for The Who singer Roger Daltrey and actor Gary Oldman.

Ms Crosbie, the Glasgow-born chief executive of Nationwide Building Society, becomes a Dame. She was previously the CEO of TSB Bank which she joined from Clydesdale Bank where she was chief operating officer.

It later merged with Virgin Money and Ms Crosbie led Nationwide’s takeover of the bank earlier this year.

Penny Mordaunt, former leader of the House of Commons, and the singer Elaine Paige also receive Damehoods.

Former England and Manchester United footballer David Beckham‘s knighthood has already been announced.

Other business figures in this year’s list are John Watson who is made a CBE for services to education and charity.

Will Whitehorn, Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University, receives the OBE  in recognition of his services to the aerospace and space industry. It is the first time the honour has been awarded specifically for contributions to the UK space sector.

He is best known for his role as the founding president of Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial space tourism venture.  He is chair of Seraphim Space Investment Trust, the world’s first publicly-listed and largest space technology investment fund, and chair of Craneware, the Edinburgh-based software company which earlier this week revealed it had rejected a £940m takeover bid.

Also awarded an OBE are Claire Mack, chief executive of the trade association Scottish Renewables, Neil Carberry, the Edinburgh-born chief executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, and Angus Campbell, director of Kilbride Shellfish.

Fiona Campbell, chief executive of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers receives the MBE. In April she was appointed vice chair of the Scottish Tourism Alliance Policy Group and is a founding director of Scottish Agritourism. Labour MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy also receives the MBE.
