Trump pledges ‘a lot of jobs’ in US-UK trade deal – Daily Business

A trade deal between the UK and the US has been signed and should bring some relief and stability to huge sections of the economy.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the agreement as he met Sir Keir Starmer at the G7 summit in Canada.
Under details released by the Department for Business and Trade, the UK aerospace sector will face no tariffs at all from the US, while the auto industry will have 10% tariffs, down from 25%.
For now, the steel industry still faces 25% tariffs, although this is less than the US’s global rate of 50% on steel and aluminium. The UK business department said the two leaders had pledged to “make progress towards 0% tariffs on core steel products as agreed”.
The president said that it was a “fair deal for both” that would produce “a lot of jobs” as he lavished praise on Starmer for doing a “great job”.
As Mr Trump uttered “great people, great people,” Sir Keir described the document as a “really important agreement So this is a very good day for both of our countries – a real sign of strength.”
He said the deal would take effect before the end of the month. He has argued that the deal with the US was essential to safeguard thousands of jobs in the British car and aerospace industries, which were on the brink of laying off staff after Trump increased tariffs.

Mr Trump also praised Sir Keir as a “great” prime minister, adding: “We’ve been talking about this deal for six years, and he’s done what they haven’t been able to do.”
He added: “We’re very longtime partners and allies and friends and we’ve become friends in a short period of time.
“He’s slightly more liberal than me to put it mildly… but we get along.”
Sir Keir added that “we make it work”, before he had to bend down to pick up the papers which fell from a binding being held up by the president.
Mr Trump announced a rangeof worldwide tariffs in April. Last month Sir Keir and Mr Trump announced the UK and US had agreed on a trade deal but gave few details.
